One Woman’s Creative Journey:

Anita Luvera Mayer
September 19, 2010 – January 2, 2011

Inspired by ethnic & historic garments, Anita Mayer designs original clothing in her Anacortes studio, infusing the work with her creative spirit. She believes there should be something magical & unique in what we wear each day & she wants to share this concept of clothing with others.

Mayer says of the work in this show:

This exhibition presents the role and situation of women in the contemporary world through the fiber arts. The garments speak to my personal experiences regarding growing older, marriage, death, and other markers of whom we become during life’s journey. We live in a youth-oriented society and I want to share and celebrate the joys of self-discovery that come with age. I was to embrace the years we have lived because I believe that gray hair, lines on the face and gnarled hands signify that a woman has had a full and challenging life and with the years gains knowledge and wisdom…These garments are my tribute to women of the world who need to be recognized and respected.

Anita Luvera Mayer is an internationally recognized weaver and versatile fiber artist, designer and author. She was first introduced to weaving in 1955 when her mother-in-law gave her a floor loom as a wedding gift. Her focus on weaving contemporary garments began in 1972 and she has focused the last 10 years of her work about women’s stories. Although she still weaves, her creative fiber work has evolved to include many types of innovative surface design techniques as well as incredible beadwork, embroidery, freeform knitting and crochet.

The Dennos Museum Center is open Monday to Saturday 10 AM to 5 PM, Thursday until 8 PM and Sundays 1-5 PM. Admission is $6.00 adults, $4.00 for children and free to museum members. For more information on the Museum and exhibition, go to www.dennosmuseum.org or call 231-995-1055. The Dennos Museum Center is located at 1701 East Front Street, Traverse City, MI 49686, at the entrance to the campus of Northwestern Michigan College.

Anita will teach a workshop "Mudpies for Adults" on Thursday and Friday, September 23 & 24 with a lecture Thursday evening.  Anyone interested in the workshop can contact Terry Tarnow at ttarnow@nmc.edu

Memorial Event for Margaret Windeknecht and Jean Brudzinski

Madelyn van der Hoogt to speak at a memorial Lecture on October 23, 2010

Michigan Weavers Guild is planning a lecture honoring two of our long-time Members who have passed away recently. Margaret Windeknecht and Jean Brudzinski were both members of long standing and made very important contributions to our guild. Both were members of the rug study group which for years was an active component of MWG. Margaret served in several positions including President. Jean was the chair of the exhibit committee and worked hard to plan and carry out our exhibit schedules. Both were talented fiber artists and continued in spite of serious physical limitations that would have deterred most of us.

Margaret was also active in the Michigan League of Handweavers as teacher and participant. She became know nationally as a teacher and author with 25 publications including 10 books. She was known as an authority in Color and Weave techniques. More recently she became known for her miniatures.
Jean was a rug weaver until her medical problems made that impossible. She then took up paper strip weaving, producing beautiful wall pieces.

Margaret passed away on March 9, 2009 and Jean on June 12. It is a terrible loss for MWG and the fiber arts.

Contributions have been made to fund a memorial lecture honoring both of these people. A committee comprised of Ken Allen, Arlene Gendelman, Joan Koelsch, Laura Lipson, Loretta Oliver and Nancy Peck are working to bring this about.

We have arranged for Madelyn van der Hoogt to speak at a memorial Lecture on October 23, 2010 at the VistaTech Center at Schoolcraft College in Livonia. This event will be open to the public and we hope that there will be many people there.  Look for further information in weeks to come.

Weaving doesn’t have to be done on a large loom. This meeting features many different types of weaving that can be done on your lap or on a table. There will be many small looms of different types for you to try, and samples of what you can do with these looms. If you have any small looms that you are wondering how to use, bring them—someone will probably be able to help you figure them out. There will be several types of potholder looms (with a twist), inkle looms, various table looms, weave-its, frame looms, a triangle loom, kumihimo, pin looms, card weaving and several more types.

Come and bring a fiber friend or two and some extra yarn from your “stash” for a fun afternoon of exploring Weaving Off The Floor.
Refreshments will be served.
