“Deflected Double Weave: Connections, Layers & Pockets” with Janney Simpson

In this zoom workshop we will weave many variations of Deflected Double Weave (DDW) on 8-shaft jack-style floor or table looms. You will first learn how to weave DDW using a skeleton tie-up or comparable lift plan. Next, we will add traditional double layers to the DDW. Then we will weave a sampler of different treadling sequences followed by how to design your own DDW designs. A discussion of yarns and setts to use for DDW will be included. We will also explore what else can be woven on DDW threading including V-shaped shawls in DDW, triple weave layers with DDW, and Shibori techniques. The workshop includes a comprehensive handout, supporting videos, and three sessions on successive Saturdays with morning and afternoon classes and a midday break for weaving.

Janney Simpson – Bio

Janney Simpson began weaving in the early 1980’s. In CT, she taught weaving at Wesleyan Potters for many years. Janney is a past President, Apprentice, Weaver of Distinction, and Lifetime Member of the Handweavers’ Guild of CT. She also served as VP/Program Chair of Michigan League of Handweavers

Now in Michigan full-time, she is currently teaching weaving at her studio, “The Barn” in Gaylord, MI. She relishes the “ah-ha” moment when new weavers throw a shuttle for the first time and return to learn more.

Additional memberships include Complex Weavers, Handweavers Guild of America, Charlevoix Weavers Guild, Cross Borders, and Cross Country Weavers. She has presented many workshops and lectures on Deflected Double Weave, Finishing and Embellishing Handwovens, Knitted Beaded Bags, Sakiori, and Weaving with Fibers of Micronesia. Privileged to be a student of many outstanding weaving and fiber art teachers, Janney strives to create one-of-a-kind pieces using a variety of yarns and weave structures on many types of looms.

Born and raised in Evanston, IL, she earned a BA degree in Chemistry at Skidmore College and worked in medical research for many years. She has two sons, a patient husband, a joyful doodle and a senior golden.
