My Year with Rust Belt Fibershed & One Year One Outfit

One year, one outfit (OYOO)  is a cohort-based project that responds to consumerism and the damaging effects of fast fashion. Participants in the OYOO project reside in the Rust Belt Fibershed region (within 250 miles of Cleveland) and create an outfit through a soil-to-soil supply chain: fiber and dyes are grown, harvested and made into a garment, all the garments are able to return to the soil at the end of their cycle.

In this lecture I will share my experience beginning with field visits to meet with sheep producers, growing flax, learning to spin and together with two incredible partners in the project eventually spun enough yarn to handweave and knit cloth for the three garments. Together with all the participants in Cohort 3, the work is currently on show at Brew House Arts in Pittsburg, PA. until October 18th.

Bio Sally Erickson Wilson

Recently I have been working with Rust Belt Fibershed in Cleveland. Local fiber has been central to working on the recent One Year One Outfit (OYOO) project. Using undyed wool from a range of breeds provided the color palette for OYOO and in my work I like  to use color from natural sources or simulate a natural palette using commercial yarns.

I grew up in a “making” family, who traveled extensively which was unusual at the time. This led to learning how to see and notice things along the way. Studying Woven Textile Design at Manchester Metropolitan University and The Royal College of Art in London, led to an industry design career in Color & Materials Design. After ten years working in France and Italy I moved to the United States 1995 working in both Color and Materials Design and Higher Education at the College for Creative Studies.

Materials, Color and Pattern, are always in my thoughts when I plan a project and I’ll often draw on what I see around me in both the natural as well as built & urban environments.
