There are times where you might want to send in a post for advertising. Here are some tips to take into consideration

Newsletter:

It is important to have specific information as if you were sending it into a newspaper. It should reflect what you want people to read. This is often called “publication ready”.

Bad example:
Would you tell your guild members that the Michigan City Guild is having a special workshop in July with Elizabeth Bennet for a teacher? She will teach a new weaving method called “Over the Rainbow.” It lasts 3 days and is open to the public and they can find more information on our Facebook page. Last year’s workshop was a big success.
Thank you,
Jane Austen from Michigan City Guild

Notes: It doesn’t have specific times, dates, and is written in a permissive way instead of advertising how you want people to see it. It also doesn’t have any graphics. While graphics aren’t necessary they do help catch attention.

Here is a good example:
Please post the attached Graphic in your next newsletter. (Attached is a full resolution graphic.) If you have any questions, email me. Thank you. Jane Austen

Note: All the information is in the graphic. Its eye catching and been proofread and is good for publication.

Social Media:

We post on Facebook and Instagram. It is much easier for us to repost something that your organization has already posted if possible. We do understand not all organizations have Facebook pages so do accept other postings. We only do this for MLH Members and their related projects.

Bad Example: Note – No image provided for post
Can you post an ad for our guild about our upcoming event?
The Tactile Invitational Fiber Exhibition

Thirteen regional contemporary textile and fiber artists will have work on display at the Holland Area Arts Council’s Padnos Gallery from January 10-March 1, 2025. The reception will be February 6, 5:30-7:00 pm.

This show will display a wide variety of masterwork including sculpture, weaving and quilts. Invited artists, many who are MLH members, are:

Kelly Allen, Jennifer Gould, Pricilla Lynch, Gloria Kirk-Hanna, Elliot Johnson, Jane Blacquiere, Judy Rosbury, Suzanne Ditsler, Sally Sundstrom, Nancy DeVries, Carol Irving, Susan Fleming and Patti Reen

Comments by our social media chair: No image provided and had to be requested. No link to the Gallery location, s/b website or their Facebook Page. Most of the information is provided. Best scenario: They create a Facebook Post and send me the link and I will share it on our MLH FB Page or they find a post provided by the hosting gallery or guild and send me that link.

What do I need: Who, What, Where, When, MLH Members included, and one or more images of the event or the work.

Good Example:

Artists (l-r): Barbara Schutzgruber, Lois Bryant, Liz Ritter, Carolyn Michaels, Robin Wilt
The Gallery at Cherry Hill is open Tuesday & Wednesday from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., and Thursday & Friday from 4 – 8 p.m. The Gallery at Cherry Hill is also open during public performances.

MarketPlace:

These tips go for marketplace as well as selling items on other forums (Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, etc).

Have a good picture of the item you are trying to sell. With phones nowadays its important to take multiple pictures from different angles and then select one you feel shows off the item. Consider taking the photo when you have natural light coming in if possible. A picture helps sell the object.

Make sure you write a good description of the item and what comes with it. Put the city of where the item is located and a contact for it unless its already built into the platform (like Facebook or Craigslist).

After you post beware of scams. Scammers will tell you they are “out of town on business,” will send cashier checks, want to send you more than the dollar amount for the item, and then have you arrange for shipping/pickup by a third party. Cashier check validity can come weeks later from your bank, and then you are out of the item and the money. Please only perform transactions in person and with cash. If you are on a site like Facebook they will ask for your phone number do not give out your phone number.
