“Maximalist Mending: Sustainable Fashion with a Punk Philosophy” with Mariel Collins

In this lecture we will explore ideas within the punk movement, and how they relate to fiber arts practices in obvious and surprising ways. We will also focus in on mending specifically, as a vehicle for expressing these ideas, and an approachable method for disrupting systems.

Mariel Collins is a graduate of the Vävstuga Intensive program and has been a production weaver at Greenfield Village for the past four years. They received their BFA from Wayne State University focused on drawing and painting, but shifted into weaving during the COVID-19 pandemic. They began their mending practice over ten years ago, and have recently started sharing their knowledge through workshops and lectures.  You can follow them on Substack @baadkidfibers.
